My Core Memory ft. Khaleja

It’s been two days since I watched Khaleja. Why’s this movie so special? I’ve asked myself this question countless times. Why???? I dug out many fond memories in this process. This is not just another movie but a timeless snapshot in my mind. One for the books!

A movie that was destined to see the success that it truly deserved after 15 years-that’s the most special part. Daivam Manushya Rupena which is the central theme of the film is an idea so ahead of its time in the world of contemporary Telugu cinema that I am aware of. That’s an absolute magic to witness. The songs and the background score by Mani Sharma were coming of age. In a way, the song “Sada Siva” became a spiritual echo of an entire generation. Mahesh’s acting especially his comic timing and that smile of his was a delight to watch. He brought a sense of freshness to everything in the film after his sabbatical. The cinematographer, who I read was Yash Bhat truly breathed life in to every frame beautifully. Another feather in the cap was the performances of all the veteran actors. Trivikram’s magic finally got its due. This movie aged like a fine wine.

As a 12 year old I used to watch the glimpses of the film on TV and fondly listen to the songs on music channels. But it pained me to have missed the chance to see it on the big screen, so I never made the effort to watch it elsewhere. After all these years when the buzz was bright that it was re-releasing, I knew I couldn’t miss it this time.

As I walked down the aisle after the movie was over, my heart felt full yet strangely heavy. I was overjoyed, but there was a quiet ache too, as if I had just fulfilled a long-lost dream, only to gently let it go. That’s beautifully strange.
